The Album
YUGEN was born in 2020 from the collaboration and thirty-year experience of three musicians from Salento. In January 2022, YUGEN recorded their first album, Tears and Light, released by Dodicilune Records and distributed by I.R.D. For this work, the group draws on the experience and finesse of Valerio Daniele (guitar), Giorgio Distante (trumpet), and Francesco Massaro (electronics).
The Music
The sound palette of the trio develops a play of space and time, where cyclic rhythmic and melodic cells blend with wide sound expansions. From these emerges a horizontal conception of the band, in which each instrument is always the protagonist of the performed piece: a suspended, evanescent soundscape, at times intimate or abstract but always rich and multifaceted. This is achieved through an aesthetic research characteristic of contemporary European jazz avant-garde, rooted in the tradition of Scandinavian countries.
Katya Fiorentino
Piano
Yugen is my expression, the opportunity to tell my story using notes.
Stefano Compagnone
Bass
Yugen is feeling free.
I have learned to balance on ostinatos and dance on melodies.
Maurizio De Tommasi
Drums
“I like to think of my works in this way: in between categories. Between time and space, between music and painting, between composition and musical surface.” [M. Feldman]
